Condition
Recurring headaches and migraines can be managed by balancing the doshas, relieving tension and cleansing the head region through Shirodhara and specialised neck therapies.
Book a ConsultationMigraine is classified as Ardhavabhedaka (half-skull splitting pain) in Ayurveda — a condition involving Vata and Pitta doshas affecting the Shira (head) region. Vata causes the throbbing, spasmodic nature of the pain, while Pitta creates the burning, photosensitive component. The condition often involves Tridosha vitiation in chronic cases. Ayurveda uniquely recognises that the head region has its own set of channels (Urdhvajatrugata Srotas) that can be directly accessed and treated through Nasya (nasal therapy) — a route that modern medicine is only recently exploring for drug delivery. The recurrence pattern of migraines reflects underlying doshic cycles that can be broken through systematic Panchakarma and preventive Nasya.
Shirodhara (continuous oil stream on the forehead) calms the hyperactive nervous system, reduces vascular spasm, and pacifies Prana Vata — addressing the neurological root of migraines. Nasya (nasal administration of medicated oils like Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila) directly clears the head channels, reduces sinus-related triggers, and prevents recurrence — this is the most important preventive therapy. Manya Basti (warm oil pooled over the neck/cervical region) releases muscular tension that often triggers cervicogenic headaches. Internal medicines — Pathyadi Kwath, Shirashuladi Vajra Rasa, and Godanti Bhasma (calcium preparation) — reduce acute episodes. Virechan is performed when Pitta is the dominant dosha.
During an active 7-day Shirodhara course, migraine frequency typically drops by 60-70%. Nasya performed daily for 7 days, then maintained as Pratimarsha Nasya (2 drops daily), prevents recurrence in most patients. Within 3 months of integrated treatment, many patients reduce from 8-10 migraine days per month to 1-2 or zero. The key is consistent preventive practice — daily Nasya, regular sleep schedule, and identification/avoidance of personal triggers.
Doctor's Note
“Migraine is one of the conditions where Ayurveda truly excels. I have seen patients on daily triptans become completely medication-free within 3 months. The secret is Nasya — it's simple, takes 2 minutes daily, and directly treats the head channels. I teach every migraine patient self-Nasya on day one. Combined with quarterly Shirodhara sessions, migraine can be effectively managed for life without dependency on painkillers. — Dr. Naresh Padwal”
