Condition
Weak digestion (agni) is at the root of many diseases in Ayurveda. Therapies and dietary correction rekindle digestive fire, clear toxins and restore gut health.
Book a ConsultationAyurveda considers Agni (digestive fire) as the foundation of health — "Rogah Sarve Api Mandagnau" (all diseases originate from weak digestion). When Agni is impaired (Mandagni), food is incompletely digested, producing Ama (metabolic toxins) that accumulates first in the GI tract, then spreads throughout the body. There are 13 types of Agni in Ayurveda, with Jatharagni (the main digestive fire) being the master controller. Digestive disorders like IBS, chronic acidity, bloating, and constipation all trace back to specific patterns of Agni dysfunction — Vishama Agni (irregular, Vata-type), Tikshna Agni (hyperactive, Pitta-type), or Manda Agni (sluggish, Kapha-type). Treatment is precisely tailored to which type of Agni disturbance is present.
Step 1 (Deepana-Pachana): Digestive fire is kindled using herbs like Trikatu, Chitrak, and Hingvashtak Churna. This burns existing Ama without creating new toxins. Step 2 (Shodhana/Purification): Based on the dosha involved — Vaman (therapeutic emesis) for Kapha-type sluggish digestion, Virechan (purgation) for Pitta-type acidity and liver congestion, or Basti for Vata-type irregular bowel. Step 3 (Rebuilding): Sansarjana Krama (graduated re-introduction of foods from rice water to normal diet over 7 days) resets gut sensitivity. Probiotic herbs like Kutaja and Bilva rebuild healthy microbiome. Step 4 (Maintenance): Personalised Pathya (dietary regimen) based on Prakriti ensures long-term digestive health.
Bloating and gas typically reduce within 3-5 days of Deepana-Pachana treatment. Chronic acidity improves within 7-10 days after Virechan. IBS symptoms (alternating constipation-diarrhoea) stabilise within 14-21 days of Basti therapy. Complete gut restoration for long-standing cases takes 2-3 months of combined treatment + dietary discipline. Most patients can reduce or eliminate antacid/PPI dependency within 4-6 weeks.
Doctor's Note
“I always say — treat the digestion first, everything else follows. Patients with skin problems, joint pain, or fatigue often find these improve "automatically" when we correct their Agni. The gut is truly the root of health in Ayurveda. I recommend all patients start with a 7-day digestive reset before addressing other concerns. — Dr. Naresh Padwal”
